Secession Art & Design Blog

Secession Art & Design opened our Bernal Heights location in August of 2007, and has since grown to represent over 50 independent artists and designers. Our retail location is a gallery, boutique, and workspace combined, creating an untraditional storefront that allows customers to experience curated shows by owner, Eden Stein, and see the process of art being made in-house by Heather Robinson.

Artist Talk with Josh Coffy and Heather Robinson

Saturday, September 15, 4-6pm

Join us for an early happy hour this Saturday at Secession. Joshua Coffy and Heather Robinson will talk about their collaborative show "Civilizations". This is an opportunity to ask questions about their process, challenges, successes, and anything else you're curious about. Come see this beautiful show featuring endangered and threatened species.

This art is created to highlight many of the creatures that are considered endangered or threatened. Their habitat is constantly being compromised in a give-and-take with civilizations. In a sense, the work is created with that same give-and-take. Artist Heather Robinson creates the playing field with layers of fabric, design, colors, and patterns. Then she hands the work to artist Joshua Coffy to add the actors. This collaborative effort is a delicate balance that pushes and pulls the attention, giving voice to the many creatures that are facing this challenge of Civilizations.
