Secession Art & Design opened our Bernal Heights location in August of 2007, and has since grown to represent over 50 independent artists and designers. Our retail location is a gallery, boutique, and workspace combined, creating an untraditional storefront that allows customers to experience curated shows by owner, Eden Stein, and see the process of art being made in-house by Heather Robinson. In 2010, 2012- 2014, Secession was awarded Best Art Gallery by San Francisco Bay Guardian readers, for continuing to push the envelope in exhibitions and wearable art.
Our philosophy and name comes from an artistic movement in the early 1900s called the Vienna Secession. The Secessionists were a group of makers from different mediums working together to create artwork and design, in response to industrialization and directly inspired by the collaborative process. Our aesthetic thrives on connecting with clientele and building community. Our store’s longevity is based on customer support, small business partnerships, and community collaborations. This process of constant collaboration pushes everyone to collectively evolve and create.
Secession Art & Design is curated based on connections — a call and response between artists, curator, and customers. Our boutique features independently-made jewelry and clothing for men, women, and children. All of our goods are hand-picked to accent the color, textures, and theme from our rotating art shows. As a result, our artists, clientele and artwork are equal parts of the experience that fuels us at Secession.
Thank you to everyone who promotes and writes about our store and happenings.
