Dianne Hoffman: He Heard the Ocean Whisper

Dianne Hoffman: He Heard the Ocean Whisper

Dianne says, "Myths answer timeless questions and serve as a compass to each generation. Legends are told to explain the world and our mortal experience by providing hope, heroes and direction. Unlike fairy tales, each are reflections of our reality. They are warnings and promises, laments as celebrations.

In this series, I have reinvented mythical themes and characters with salvaged, found objects. Much like the legends I have portrayed- these repurposed objects provide a unique perspective into our disposable past and the renewed transformation we are capable of. I have intently depicted a delicate balance between light and dark and the sincerity found in their unified stories.  In this way, my translation of these sacred tales has added another layer of fact to their endlessly relevant, fictitious testimonies.

Legend has it that the Neriedes were 50 sea-nymph daughters of Nereus, the Old Man of the Sea. They were goddesses of the Ocean's rich bounty and protectors of sailors and fishermen, coming to the aid of those in distress. The Nereides were able to entice and tame the creatures of the Aegean Sea with their alluring beauty. The fish tailed horses known as Hippokampoi, became their trusted mounts. "
