| Simple by Design Show: Sept. 29 - Nov. 28, 2009 | Opening Reception: Oct. 9, 6:30-9:30PM Mission/Bernal Heights’ gallery boutique announces fall show and extended hours during ArtSpan’s first Open Studios weekend, Oct. 11-12, 2009 San Francisco, Calif. (Sept. 22, 2009) -Secession Art & Design invites you to a fall showing of new work inspired by the simple things in life: beautiful, handcrafted wearable art and adornments for the home. Continuing the gallery boutique’s ongoing exploration of fashion and design from craft, vintage, independent and street vantage points, the gallery’s autumn group show promises a diverse collection of handmade fine art, home wares, apparel and jewelry by independent design talents from the Bay Area and beyond. “As the days get shorter, Secession Art & Design gallery is exploring the idea of home as a locus of creative expression and the different ways everyday conversations, revelations and memories can become art that transforms one’s style and urban nest,” says gallery owner-curator and designer Eden Stein As a participant in the citywide Open Studios taking place throughout October, the gallery will have extended operating hours on Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The show’s featured artists Heather Robinson and Brian Schuck present works that reveal complexities and richness underlying ordinary places and imagery from everyday life. Exploring the contradictory role the home assumes as both a safe retreat or nesting place, on the one hand, and an entangling web, on the other, Robinson’s latest paintings borrow materials, motifs and techniques from traditional domestic arts such as embroidery and crocheted lace to depict dream-like landscapes populated by birds, butterflies and flowers. Schuck’s screen prints feature people, often the artist’s own neighbors and friends, engaged in momentary breaks from the hectic world at large. Emphasizing vibrant colors and strong composition, Schuck’s works contemplate the solace humans seek in natural elements such as water, light and plant life. Wearable art and accessories abound in the ever-popular Secession boutique. Highlights include the eye-catching hues and whimsical shapes of women’s apparel by Kelly Lane, the eco-friendly and casually feminine apparel of Rebe, a collection of women’s outwear by De Novo featuring classic silhouettes with modern edge, retro-inspired apparel with a contemporary edge from Lemon Twist, the handmade jewelry of Tessa Kemp, hand-woven patterned scarves by Venn Apparel, limited edition and one-of-a-kind belt buckles from Booty Boutique, eco-friendly and hand-printed textiles from Swanky Swell and additional apparel and accessories from Minor Detail, Ava Love, Taryn McCabe, Nicacelly, Threads by Cho-Cho and Medium Reality. Along with the featured artists and designers, the gallery boutique houses current collections from Secession Art & Design in-house designers Colleen Mauer, New Skool and Twelve Designs: Modern Vintage Jewelry. A portion of the proceeds from the show benefits Streetside Stories (www.streetside.org).
